Hi I'm Tom Burt and I run the Independence, MO Branch of the A.C.W.A.
Being a martial artist for over 20 years I am definitely an advocate for traditional training. However, I realize many people either do not have the time or are not interested in spending years learning the "art". So my goal is to be able to offer the nuts and bolts of reality based self defense, stripped of "tradition", for those seeking a practical solution in a modern context.
Why should people train with you?
A.C.W.A. Combatives is different from traditional martial arts. There are no forms or kata to memorize and no complicated techniques that take years to master. Our focus is on instinctive skills using hands, elbows, knees and feet (so pretty much your entire body). The goal is to give you easy to learn, reality based techniques that quickly build your self defense ability. What you learn in class today MUST work in the parking lot tonight.
How long will it take to learn?
A.C.W.A. Combatives is what we refer to as "reality based" self defense; meaning it looks at real world situations and applies tactics based on a modern mindset of personal protection. In other words, it gives you a skill set that you can apply right away in today's environment. From the very first lesson you will come away with tools that can be used immediately without spending long periods of time to get proficient.
What would a typical class be like with you?
Lessons are 1 hour and are divided into body mechanics, hands on application and self defense psychology. Dress code is jeans and tennis shoes and the A.C.W.A. Team Member shirt. We train in "street" clothes for realism and the team member shirt gives a sense of community. We offer a relaxed, safe and friendly training environment where you will have FUN learning and feel like a part of the "family".
Who trains with you?
Our A.C.W.A. Combatives Program is for anyone interested in becoming the best version of themselves they can be. From high school and college students to working moms and dads; twentysomethings to octogenarians and even combat veterans and police officers; EVERYONE can benefit from this training.
